Allergy Testing
At Sussex Private GP, we are proud to offer specialist allergy testing services for children. While our clinic is expanding its services, we are currently able to provide allergy testing for children only.
We understand the growing concerns around childhood allergies, and to provide the highest standard of care, we have partnered with an experienced Consultant Paediatric Allergist. They can assess your child’s symptoms, request appropriate allergy testing, and guide you through personalised management plans based on the results.
Why Allergy Testing Matters
Children may experience allergies for a variety of reasons, most commonly due to food or environmental triggers. These allergens can present with a wide range of symptoms including:
- Persistent cough
- Sneezing or nasal congestion
- Wheezing or shortness of breath
- Itchy eyes
- Eczema or unexplained rashes
- Abdominal discomfort
Uncovering the source of these symptoms is vital in order to improve your child’s quality of life and prevent future health complications. Our allergy testing service is designed to do just that – with care, expertise, and clarity.
What is a Skin Prick Test?
The skin prick test is a quick, straightforward, and minimally invasive procedure used to help identify specific allergens responsible for your child’s symptoms.
A small number of common allergens is placed on the surface of the skin, usually on the forearm. Using a tiny, blunt lancet, the skin is gently pricked to allow the allergen to enter the top layer. If your child is allergic to any of the substances, a small, raised bump (similar to a mosquito bite) will appear at the test site within 10–15 minutes.
Common Allergens We Test For
- Tree and grass pollens
- Mould spores
- Animal fur and dander
- House dust mites
- Latex
- A wide variety of foods
When pre-prepared allergen extracts are not suitable, prick-to-prick testing using actual food items can also be carried out.

Preparing for Your Appointment
What to Expect on the Day
The Consultant will first take a full clinical history and determine which allergens should be tested. Our trained nurse will then carry out the test by gently pricking the skin with each allergen. Results are usually visible within 10–15 minutes. Any reaction will be closely monitored.
Is It Safe?
Skin prick testing is considered very safe for children. While discomfort is minimal, some itching or redness may occur at the test site – this usually settles quickly. Severe reactions such as anaphylaxis are extremely rare, and our team is fully trained to manage any emergency if it were to arise. Antihistamines can be given afterwards if needed.
