Hydrogen Breath Test
At Sussex Private GP, we are committed to providing comprehensive, patient-centred diagnostic care for both adults and children. One of the key investigations we offer is the Hydrogen Breath Test a safe, non-invasive, and effective diagnostic tool carried out in our clinic.
This test helps to identify several common yet often overlooked gastrointestinal issues, including:
- Lactose intolerance
- Fructose intolerance
- Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)
- Helicobacter pylori infection
These conditions can cause symptoms such as abdominal discomfort, bloating, excessive wind, diarrhoea, or unexplained fatigue. Early and accurate detection is essential to ensure appropriate treatment and relief from ongoing symptoms.
Why We Recommend the Hydrogen Breath Test
We offer this test to both adults and children who present with persistent digestive symptoms, especially when the cause is not immediately clear. The hydrogen breath test is particularly useful because:
- It identifies intolerances or infections that may not be picked up on routine tests.
- It is non-invasive and involves no blood tests or endoscopic procedures.
- It allows us to tailor treatment plans based on precise diagnostic insight.
- It is suitable for children, offering a gentle and straightforward way to investigate symptoms like chronic tummy pain or irregular bowel habits.
What to Expect During the Test
Patients are asked to fast overnight before the test. On arrival at the clinic, a baseline breath sample is collected by simply breathing into the testing device. Following this, the patient (adult or child) will drink a specially prepared test solution.
Breath samples are then taken at regular intervals. The device measures the concentration of hydrogen in the breath (recorded in parts per million). A rise of more than 20 parts per million above the baseline typically indicates a positive result, suggesting the presence of one of the targeted conditions.
For children, the procedure is adapted to be as comfortable and stress-free as possible, with our experienced clinical team on hand to provide reassurance throughout.
