Ultrasound Scan

At Sussex Private GP, we offer high-quality ultrasound imaging services for both adults and children in a calm, private and family-friendly setting. Our scans are carried out by experienced professionals using advanced ultrasound technology to provide accurate, timely diagnostic information without the use of radiation.

What is an Ultrasound Scan?

An ultrasound scan, also known as a sonogram, is a safe, non-invasive procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed images of the body’s internal structures. It is widely used in both adult and paediatric care to investigate symptoms, monitor conditions, and support clinical diagnosis.

For children, ultrasound is especially beneficial as it does not use ionising radiation, making it suitable for patients of all ages, including infants. A typical scan takes between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the area being assessed.

Why Might You or Your Child Need an Ultrasound?

Ultrasound scans help clinicians better understand what’s happening inside the body by providing real-time images of organs, tissues, blood flow, and other internal structures. Common reasons we carry out ultrasounds include:

For Children:

  • Abdominal Assessment – to investigate tummy pain, constipation, urinary tract issues, and organ abnormalities.
  • Neck Lumps and Swellings – to evaluate the nature of lumps, whether they are swollen lymph nodes, cysts, or other masses.
  • Musculoskeletal Issues – to assess joint or muscle pain, injuries, or developmental conditions such as hip dysplasia.

For Adults:

  • Abdominal Pain or Bloating – to examine organs such as the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, and pancreas.
  • Pelvic and Gynaecological Concerns – to investigate issues related to the uterus, ovaries, or bladder.
  • Soft Tissue and Joint Complaints – to look into suspected tears, inflammation, or other musculoskeletal problems.
  • Thyroid and Neck Evaluation – to investigate lumps, nodules or persistent swelling in the neck area.

In all cases, ultrasound helps clinicians assess the size, structure, and function of internal organs, guiding further treatment or management as needed.

What to Expect During the Scan

Whether you or your child are having a scan, the process is simple and painless. You’ll lie comfortably on a bed in a dimmed room while a trained sonographer or radiologist applies a special gel to the skin and gently moves a handheld probe over the area being examined.

This probe sends sound waves through the body and collects the returning echoes to create images on a monitor. In some cases, you may be asked to change position slightly to obtain the clearest view.

Children are welcome to have a parent or carer stay with them throughout the scan for reassurance.

After the Scan

Once enough images have been captured, the gel is wiped off and you or your child will be free to go. If no additional tests are required, you can return home straight away. A detailed report will be sent directly to the referring clinician for review and discussion.
